• Lenovo ThinkPad L520 slows down when AC power adapter is plugged in

  I have a new laptop Lenovo ThinkPad L520 (7859-5BG) Core i5-2520M(2.5GHz) with 4GB RAM. Having installed Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit, while browsing with Chrome on GNOME classic (no effects), I noticed 173% CPU usage by chrome browser process, and the system slowly got very very slow, Now, at this stage as I removed the power adapter, the system suddenly got faster (and stopped the lagging behavior) and CPU usage drops down to 48% !! Observation 1: I was browsing through chrome when my system seemed to be seriously lagging, so I killed chrome to see if it gets any faster. But there remained no difference. Notice that CPU usage was a bit strange here. It showed no high activity, but as soon as I would click on applications in gnome panel, it would shoot CPU usage to 70, or 80 or 90 or 143% etc. depending on how quickly i clicked back and forth. At this instance I removed by AC adapter of my laptop, and suddenly system got fine. So i again clicked on gnome panel, and noticed that it now took only 7% or 12% or 13% at max, with same kind of clicks in application menu. Observation 2: At the other times, with AC adapter plugged in, top indicates four instances of chromium taking 90%, 60%, 47% and 2% (for example), and then once I take out the AC adapter same processes take lesser CPU all of a sudden Intermediate conclusions: What does this indicate ? I cannot figure out any "other" process in "top" that is suddenly being triggered, its the same process that hogs up my CPU once AC power is plugged in ! NOTE: the problem is now CONFIRMED, as i can repeat that when I have power adapter plugged in ! Can anyone tell me what exactly does this indicate ? What is wrong, is it some bug with power management or what ?

• firefox raided?

  ubuntu 12.10 with firefox 17.0 firefox is now suddenly not starting any more ? (since I tried something with virtualbox and win7 firefox seems to be raided somehow ? - then after next boot virtualbox with win7 did not work any more and had message like here: Premature end of data in tag VirtualBox line 8. Location: '/home/$user/VirtualBox VMs/V12/V12.vbox', line 86 (8), column 2. /home/vbox/vbox-4.2.4/src/VBox/Main/src-server/MachineImpl.cpp[724] (nsresult Machine::registeredInit()). Fehlercode: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Komponente: Machine Interface: IMachine {22781af3-1c96-4126-9edf-67a020e0e858} ) this happened all - after win7 made an update and virtual hard-disk with size of normally 25 Gibi exceeded to 26.8 Gibi I plugged (when I created virtualbox with win7) usb-hard-disk with 500 Gibi, but somehow win7 was not installed on disk with 500 Gibi - instead only virtual-harddisk with default 25 Gibi was created - and smaller harddisk with maximum of 120 Gibi was restless stuffed out. This created then the problem with "raided" firefox and firefox cannot start any more. After I delelted virtualbox with win7 - there are 12 Gibi free space back on the smaller harddisk - but firefox remains after reboot out-of-function and does not start.

• Taming Hopping Windows

  At first glance, hopping windows seem fairly innocuous and obvious. They organize events into windows with a simple periodic definition: the windows have some duration d (e.g. a window covers 5 second time intervals), an interval or period p (e.g. a new window starts every 2 seconds) and an alignment a (e.g. one of those windows starts at 12:00 PM on March 15, 2012 UTC). var wins = xs     .HoppingWindow(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5),                    TimeSpan.FromSeconds(2),                    new DateTime(2012, 3, 15, 12, 0, 0, DateTimeKind.Utc)); Logically, there is a window with start time a + np and end time a + np + d for every integer n. That’s a lot of windows. So why doesn’t the following query (always) blow up? var query = wins.Select(win => win.Count()); A few users have asked why StreamInsight doesn’t produce output for empty windows. Primarily it’s because there is an infinite number of empty windows! (Actually, StreamInsight uses DateTimeOffset.MaxValue to approximate “the end of time” and DateTimeOffset.MinValue to approximate “the beginning of time”, so the number of windows is lower in practice.) That was the good news. Now the bad news. Events also have duration. So there are lots of non-empty windows if we apply a hopping window to that single event! For this reason, we need to be careful with hopping window queries in StreamInsight. Or we can switch to a custom implementation of hopping windows that doesn’t suffer from this shortcoming. The alternate window implementation produces output only when the input changes. We start by breaking up the timeline into non-overlapping intervals assigned to each window. In figure 1, six hopping windows (“Windows”) are assigned to six intervals (“Assignments”) in the timeline. Next we take input events (“Events”) and alter their lifetimes (“Altered Events”) so that they cover the intervals of the windows they intersect. In figure 1, you can see that the first event e1 intersects windows w1 and w2 so it is adjusted to cover assignments a1 and a2. Finally, we can use snapshot windows (“Snapshots”) to produce output for the hopping windows. Notice however that instead of having six windows generating output, we have only four. The first and second snapshots correspond to the first and second hopping windows. The remaining snapshots however cover two hopping windows each! While in this example we saved only two events, the savings can be more significant when the ratio of event duration to window duration is higher. Figure 1: Timeline The implementation of this strategy is straightforward. We need to set the start times of events to the start time of the interval assigned to the earliest window including the start time. Similarly, we need to modify the end times of events to the end time of the interval assigned to the latest window including the end time. The following snap-to-boundary function that rounds a timestamp value t down to the nearest value t' <= t such that t' is a + np for some integer n will be useful.   I have 3 x 4 TB disks in a NAS that I want to group together and access as if they were one whole 'unit' of some kind. I also have a 250GB disk containing the OS - this is full of films and tv shows currently. I thought zfs sounded good so I created a raidz zpool, after installing the ppa sudo zpool create store raidz /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd and set the mountpoint to /mnt/store sudo zfs set mountpoint=/mnt/store /store checked it was successful - I think it was sudo zfs list NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT store 266K 7.16T 170K /mnt/store Then I wanted to move over a whole load of files from my home directory. I went to where the to-be-copied folder was (called media) and entered sudo cp -R * /mnt/store cp: cannot create directory `/mnt/store/media': No space left on device It seems like it's not copying over to the new filesystem I made (or thought I did). I've never really done this type of thing until a few days ago so may be running before I can walk... is this not the right way to copy files across? I've only used windows before so the idea of mountpoints is a bit mind boggling. I'm using XBMCbuntu 12 beta 2.0 which is based on 12.04. Will retry with normal Ubuntu 12.04 desktop to see if that's the problem. thanks for the help!

• Is shipping a Clojure desktop app realistic?

  I'm currently shipping a desktop Java application. It is a plain old Java 5 Java / Swing app and so far everything worked nicely. Java 5 was targetted because some users were on OS X version / computers that shall never have Java 6 (we may lift this limitation soon and switch to a newer Java and simply abandoning my users stuck with Java 5). I'm quickly getting up to speed with Clojure but I haven't really done lots of Clojure-to-Java and Java-to-Clojure yet and I was wondering if it was realistic to ship a Clojure desktop application instead of a Java application? The application I'm shipping is currently about 12 MB with all the .jar so adding Clojure doesn't seen to be too much of an issue. My plan would be to have Clojure call Java APIs: my application is already divided in several independent jars. If I understand correctly calling Clojure from Java is harder than calling Java code from Clojure which is why I'd basically rewrite all the UI (part of the UI, mixing Swing components and self-made BufferedImages needs to be rewritten anyway due to the rise of retina display), and do all the 'wiring' from Clojure. So that's the problem I'm facing: is it realistic to ship a Clojure desktop app? (it certainly doesn't seem to be very widespread but then shipping plain Java desktop apps ain't that common either and I'm doing it anyway) Technically, what would need to be done? (compared to shipping a Java app)

  Well it's the Friday before MIX10, and I'm officially of no use to anybody. I'll be driving up to 'Vegas Sunday ... hopefully rolling in mid-late afternoon, checking in at my $31.50/night (including WiFi) Motel, and getting registered then hanging out around registration to see who is there. First organized thing to do is 9PM, so I'm open to suggestions Sunday evening... maybe we can get a gang together for dinner ?? Monday is the Keynote ... I'm addicted to the buzz in the ballroom the first day, hope to be close to the front, trying to live blog. Then straight to Ballroom A and stake out the spot I'll be in for all 3 days, and you all know why :) I've tagged 40 sessions that I 'want' to see, and there's only 12 slots... damn... if I could, I'd try the Multiplicity thing, but I'm afraid I'd get the idiot first try -- or maybe got that one already :) ... but at least I tagged them to make it easy to find after the videos are up. Stuff going on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night. I'm staying over for an event on Thursday, and driving back on Friday. I'm not sure how much blogging I'll be doing, but I'll try to hit some 'Cream high spots. I'm sure everyone #NotAtMIX is going to be tuned into the sessions online. I'll be wearing TShirts with WynApse.com and SilverlightCream.com printed on the back... so if you see some old curmudgeon with such a shirt, IT'S ME! • Developing a SQL Server Function in a Test-Harness.

  On March 10th, 2012 the first ever PowerShell Saturday conference took place in Columbus, OH and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.  We had 100 attendees from 10 different states (the biggest surprise to me) come to see 6 speakers present on a variety of PowerShell topics: introduction, WMI, SharePoint, Active Directory, Exchange, 3rd party products and more.      A big thank you also goes out to a number of people.   Anfang August hat Oracle ein neues Produkt namens Oracle Key Vault (OKV) zum Einsatz freigegeben. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Hardware Security Modul (HSM) - also um ein Stück Hardware zum Speichern von Schlüsseln, Passwörtern und Dateien, die Schlüssel und Passwörter enthalten. Oracle Datenbank Installationen nutzen die zuletzt genannte Form des Speicherns von Passwörtern und Schlüsseln in Dateien für Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) und external password stores. Die Dateien werden in den Versionen 10 und 11 der Datenbank als Wallets bezeichnet, in der Version 12 als Keystores. Allerdings gibt es auch schon seit der Datenbankversion 11.2 beim Einsatz von TDE die Möglichkeit, statt der Wallets / Keystores HSMs einzusetzen. Das erlaubt eine gemeinsame Nutzung von Schlüsseln - was wiederum zum Beispiel den Einsatz von TDE auf RAC Installationen perfekt unterstützt. ein HSM kann von mehreren Anwendungen genutzt werden. • Struggling to get set up with JOGL2.0

  I guess that Game Dev' is a more sensible place for my problem then SO. I did have JOGL1.1 set up and working, but I soon discovered that it did not support the latest OpenGL, so I started work on upgrading to JOGL2.0 it's not gone too well. Firstly, is it worth me trying to get JOGL to work, or should I just move over to LWJGL? I am fairly comfortable with OpenGL (via C++) and from what I did get working with JOGL1.1, I seem to be OK adapting to it. Assuming that I stick with JOGL, am I foolish for trying to use JOGL2.0? From what I can gather, JOGL2.0 is still in beta, but I am willing to go with it as I want to make use of the latest OpenGL I can. I have been using the Eclipse IDE and have set up a user library for JOGL, here is a screen shot of the configuration and I have added this user library to my own Eclipse project. the system variable %JOGL_HOME% points to "C:\Users\edacosh\Downloads\JOGL2.0" so that should work fine. Now, the problem I actually having, when I try to run my code, on the line GLProfile glp = GLProfile.getDefault(); The code stops with the following message...   If you are having troubles (shown below) when you publish your access database to https SharePoint2010 site with self-signed certificate. Problem: First you are getting a warning see the screenshot below: And then getting the error message: Solution: The error “The name of the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site” comes when the ‘common name’ in the certificate doesn’t match the address you provided in browser to access the site. To fix the problem , you need to use script to generate the certificate rather than using the IIS UI, this is because it will default the common name to the server name and you will have the above problem when using that certificate to a different host-name web application. • I can't install Ubuntu on my Dell Inspiron 15R at all

  I'm attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04LTS, 64 bit onto a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop. I've shrunk down one of the windows partitions and even used gparted to format the vacant space as ext4. However, the install disk simply does not present any options when it comes to the partitioning step. What I get is a non-responsive blank table As well as the above, I've changed the BIOS settings so that USB emulation is disabled (as per Can't install on Dell Inspiron 15R), and changed the SATA Operation setting to all three possible options. • What Poor Project Management Might Be Costing You

  For project-intensive organizations, capital investment decisions define both success and failure. Getting them wrong—the risk of delays and schedule and cost overruns are ever present—introduces the potential for huge financial losses. The resulting consequences can be significant, and directly impact both a company’s profit outlook and its share price performance—which in turn is the fundamental measure of executive performance. This intrinsic link between long-term investment planning and short-term market performance is investigated in the independent report Stock Shock, written by a consultant from Clarity Economics and commissioned by the EPPM Board. A new international steering group organized by Oracle, the EPPM Board brings together senior executives from leading public and private sector organizations to explore the critical role played by enterprise project and portfolio management (EPPM). Stock Shock reviews several high-profile recent project failures, and combined with other research reviews the lessons to be learned. It analyzes how portfolio management is an exercise in balancing risk and reward, a process that places the emphasis firmly on executives to correctly determine which potential investments will deliver the greatest value and contribute most to the bottom line. Conversely, it also details how poor evaluation decisions can quickly impact the overall value of an organization’s project portfolio and compromise long-range capital planning goals.
